Meet Hoa

My family roots are deeply embedded in Vietnamese culture, shaped by the values instilled by my grandpa from an early age. My full Vietnamese name, Hiền Hòa Nguyễn, reflects traits of affability and kindness, echoing the traditional virtues of family harmony and generosity. Born and raised in the vibrant Vietnamese enclave of Versailles in New Orleans, Louisiana, my upbringing was steeped in community and familial bonds. Fleeing the aftermath of the Vietnam War in 1975, my family, like many other Vietnamese refugees, sought solace and opportunity in New Orleans, where they established a neighborhood food mart. As the eldest sister, I assumed the role of "chị hai," assisting my parents at the store while supporting my younger siblings in their education.

Hoa’s Experience in Oregon

My journey led me to Portland, Oregon, at the age of 15, where I found a new home and educational opportunities at St. Mary's Academy. Since then, I have dedicated the past two decades to serving my community through nonprofits and schools, focusing on program development, community organizing, and youth and family advocacy. Currently, I serve as a Student and Community Engagement Specialist for the Clackamas Education Service District, addressing chronic absenteeism and its underlying causes among underserved students. Joining the David Douglas School Board in 2021 allowed me to extend my impact across districts, advocating for educational equity and empowerment.

Why We Need to keep Hoa in Salem

I have deep roots in Oregon’s education community across the region and relationships from years of civic leadership roles. As a bilingual, bicultural educator, I offer a perspective essential for addressing the diverse needs of our state and district. Throughout my career, I have navigated complex systems, driving positive change for youth and families. My inaugural Legislative Session saw me effectively balancing multiple roles, demonstrating my ability to connect the dots and implement impactful measures. Drawing from my lived experiences, I bring practical insights and a relentless commitment to improving the lives of Oregonians, embodying the spirit of “connecting the dots” in every endeavor.
